Planning for Stress-Free Family Photos on Your Wedding Day

Family portraits are such an important reminder of a wedding day but unfortunately, they can be one of the more stressful portions of the day. The last thing I want is for you to get the energy zapped out of you by family pictures (especially if bride and groom portraits are afterwards!). Here is my best advice for making sure family pictures go smoothly.

My Favorite Spots to Take Photos in Palo Duro Canyon

I have taken engagement, family, senior, and wedding photos in Palo Duro Canyon literally dozens and dozens of times. It never gets old for me! Each time I’m driving on the flat plains and then suddenly the world opens up into the canyon, I am amazed. It is absolutely my favorite place to take pictures around Amarillo, Texas. It is beautiful and versatile. And because of that versatility, I thought it was necessary to create this blog to show some of my favorite spots within the canyon to take photos. These little sub-locations within the canyon are completely different from one another and it’s hard to choose a favorite among them. They all look great any time of year but some can look drastically different from one season to another and on those, I’ve noted which season the picture was taken in.

The Mauldin's | Palo Duro Canyon Family Photos

The Mauldin's family photo session in Palo Duro Canyon was one of those sessions that I got too distracted talking to the family and getting to know them when I should have been taking their pictures! I'm sort of kidding but I really did love getting to know this wonderful couple and their energetic, spirited kids. I can tell that they have a ton of love for each other. When a little girl tells her mom several times in an hour in the most sincere voice, "I love you, Mom," you know they've got something special.

The Kennedy's | Palo Duro Canyon Family Photos

I love seeing past clients over and over again and watching their families grow! The first time I took Fern and Jason's pictures was about a year and a half ago. Her family had flown in from Thailand and they wanted to commemorate the occasion. The second time I took their photos they were announcing their pregnancy. This time around, little Emma is here and it was the perfect time to celebrate their first Christmas as a family of three. I don't think it gets much cuter than Emma with her giggly smiles for mom and dad.

The Wyckoff's | Family photos at home and at Palo Duro Canyon

It was a struggle for this family session to actually happen. We had to reschedule TWICE for bad weather! But the evening we ended up with could not have been more perfect - there's nothing quite like a glorious spring day in our little corner of the world. We began the Wyckoff's family photos in their picturesque front yard on a brick street in Canyon. They've put a lot of love into their home and I was so happy to create some memories for them at this happy time in their lives.

The Fryml's | Palo Duro Canyon Family Photos

The Fryml trio, who recently moved here from Los Angeles, just so happened to book their family photo session on their son Isaac's first birthday. It looks warm and sunny in Palo Duro Canyon but in reality it was bitterly cold. However, Isaac was a total trooper and his parents worked so hard to keep him happy, warm, and smiley. You can tell that this family has a lot of love for one another and I seriously enjoyed seeing the excitement between them. It was one of those sessions that left me feeling warm and fuzzy (despite the frigid temps!) as I drove home.

The Mosley's | Lake Tanglewood Family Photos

After an initial rescheduling, the Mosley family got pretty lucky with their family picture session because it was on wonderfully warm December day. That's something I love about West Texas - we are already in December and it still looks and feels like fall outside (though I don't want to jinx it!). However, I'm pretty sure that Lake Tanglewood would look beautiful no matter what and the Mosley family sure looks good in it. Jordan and Ryan recently got married in Turks and Caicos (I'm jealous!) and I loved getting to photograph their first pictures together as a family.

The Liles Family | Amarillo Family Photographer

I love this family! I photographed Holly and Tyler's wedding in Dumas, Texas back in June of this year and I was so happy when she contacted me to take her family pictures this fall. Young, happy, energetic families are one of my favorite things to take pictures of and the Holly, Tyler, ad their son Landon did not disappoint me.

The Coe's | Sunrise Family Session in Palo Duro Canyon

The Coe family woke up early on a Saturday morning and headed out to Palo Duro Canyon with me for a sunrise family session. I don't do a lot of sunrise shoots but now I'm officially in love with the soft morning light. The family's youngest member (except for the new baby on the way!) stole the show. Lily had the sweetest smile and the biggest doe eyes. When her mom told her to "do her pose", Lily would stand sassily with one hand on her hip and flash her nose-crinkling, heart-melting smile.

Chau Mai | Palo Duro Canyon Family Photos

This family session in Palo Duro Canyon was basically one big giggle fest. Isabel is turning one soon and her parents wanted to document the momentous occasion with some family photos. They moved here from Vietnam a few years ago so I'm sure their relatives back home will appreciate seeing how happy and smiley Isabel is. I really loved meeting this young family. Also, editing their session made my heart happy because it was smile after smile from one the cutest babies I've ever seen. If this doesn't give you baby fever then I don't know what will.

The Morgan Family | Palo Duro Canyon Family Photos

This was the first family photo session of the year that truly felt like fall and I can't tell you how happy that makes me! The weather has cooled ever so slightly and there is a tinge of "fall-ness" to the landscape. Just a tinge. This is my second favorite time of year (after spring!) and I love spending it with amazing, fun clients. Though I only got to spend a short time with the Morgan family, I loved getting to know them and seeing their love for each other.

Jillian + Lila | Palo Duro Canyon

There's a first time for everything, right? Well Jillian + Lila was my first dog birthday photography session! Jillian (human) contacted me a few weeks ago about celebrating Lila's (dog) 1st birthday with a photo session and obviously I jumped at the opportunity. I understand what it's like to have a special relationship with your pup so to do a session honoring that relationship is so important to me. There really is no love like the kind between a dog and her owner.
