Addie | Portraits in the Studio

This girl! What can I say? She’s the best.

Addie has been my second shooter for weddings for over two years and she puts up with a lot from me! Haha. She is patient, kind, and often makes up for my shortcomings. We are opposite in many ways and I think that helps us when it comes to taking pictures at wedding. When I’m rushing around, she is calm and methodical. I could not ask for a better employee and friend.

BIG, exciting news for Kayla Smith Photography!

Over the past several years of working as a photographer, I have been truly blessed. Through hard work and God’s help, I have been able to grow a successful business in a saturated market.

I’m excited to announce that I will now be opening a photography studio!

I have had many clients express the need for 1) a place to take photos indoors when the weather is bad 2) something different from the usual on-location sessions and 3) types of sessions I had not been able to offer without a space of my own (professional headshots, newborns, etc).

Featured | Rocky Mountain Bride

I am so excited and proud to have Brenna and Landon's Santa Fe Wedding published on Rocky Mountain Bride this week! The beauty of the sunset on their day had me absolutely giddy. It was one of my favorite weddings from last year for so many reasons and I'm happy that more people get to see it!

Some of my favorite images from 2017

70 portrait sessions and 24 weddings later, I can't believe another year is almost over. This has been a year of substantial change for me personally - Mason graduated college and started a new job and we are expecting a baby girl. I did a ton of traveling with weddings in Lubbock, one in Santa Fe, another in Dallas, and an engagement session in Washington, D.C. I'm exhausted! But happy :)

The Schmitz's | My own family photos in Kansas

Whenever I go back home to Highland, Kansas, the small town where I am from, I am always surprised about how green it is! Because I have lived in Amarillo for about four years, I often forget what the color green looks like. But seriously, growing up I didn't appreciate how beautiful my original home is. I lived in the country up until the time I went to college and I often miss the rolling hills, corn fields, and quiet nights of the country.

Meet Adelyn | My new second shooter!

Up until this point, I have never shot a wedding without Mason by my side. When we found out he was offered a job that would take him away from doing weddings with me, I was a little nervous. At first I thought that I might be able to do it on my own but I quickly realized that I needed a second shooter. Mason has done a lot for me - he not only takes pictures but he also wrangles family members and allows me to basically be in two places at once.

What you should know about my personality before hiring me

People who are searching for a photographer - for whatever reason (weddings, family pictures, etc.) - have a lot of choices. It’s a saturated market so I fully believe that clients should choose a photographer by looking at all of the factors: price, quality of work, style, past reviews, print options, among others. Another factor to consider is the photographer’s personality, especially if it’s for a wedding day. If you’re going to be spending an extended amount of time with someone, you will want to actually like them!

Living in fear means we don't trust God

I struggle with living in fear. Not all of the time but sometimes and it’s a big problem. Many of my waking hours are filled with thoughts of dread as I come up with various fear-inducing scenarios in my mind such as: Someone is going to break into my house and steal my things. My house is going to catch on fire and we’ll lose everything.

Our First Home | Remodeling

Mason and I decided to buy and remodel our first home in the middle of the busiest season of the year. I know, we're crazy. We're almost to the end of this wild ride with only a few finishing touches to go. It has been stressful and exhausting but now that we can spend our days in a home of our own, we know that it has been worth it.

Year in Review: Some of my favorite images from 2016

Holy cow, it's been an exciting year! This is the year that I finally started doing photography full-time without depending on income from another job. It's the year that Mason and I bought our first home (my office is no longer in the kitchen!) And it's the year that I shot 28 weddings and around 100 portrait sessions. To say that it's been sunshine and rainbows all year would be a lie, however. I've had many frustrations and difficult moments but it's all been worth it. I'm still ecstatic that I get to wake up every day and live this life.

Roscoe will never have to be alone again!

By the way, Roscoe is the name of the cute, spunky Pomeranian in the photo above. He's our dog baby and he loathes being alone. Whenever Mason and I leave the house, he hides under the couch and ignores us. He won't even let us pet him goodbye. But when we get home, he freaks out - he excitedly spins around in circles, jumps four feet in the air, and makes us pet him until he is satisfied. He needs a lot of attention. Well, there's good news for Roscoe!

River Falls Exploration | Personal Photography

After my amazing surprise proposal session with Lisa + Tony, we explored the vast, spacious landscape of River Falls, a gated community outside of Amarillo on the edge of the Palo Duro Canyon. Going to River Falls is like being transported into an entirely different place that's nothing like the rest of West Texas. It's not even like Palo Duro Canyon. There are waterfalls, caves, hidden oases, and expansive meadows so I definitely took the opportunity to get in some personal photography time, something I don't often do.
