Our First Home | Remodeling

Mason and I decided to buy and remodel our first home in the middle of the busiest season of the year. I know, we're crazy. We're almost to the end of this wild ride with only a few finishing touches to go. It has been stressful and exhausting but now that we can spend our days in a home of our own, we know that it has been worth it.

Silly me - I forgot to take before pictures! The only ones I have are iPhone pictures of the living room and a progress picture of Mason pouring the concrete countertops in the kitchen. As you can see below, the house was an okay house. It was perfectly livable but it lacked charm. It had carpet throughout the whole house except the kitchen and bathrooms - where there was linoleum flooring that looks like wood. It also had giant fans that made the rooms feel tiny. The whole house was a yellow-beige color and looked pretty much like the living room. It also had orange-peel texture.

We've waited through four years of marriage to buy our first house so we decided that we wanted it to be exactly right. Mason started demolishing right away. By the time I got back from getting the water turned on, the kitchen countertop was torn out and I'll be honest, I had my first of many freak outs. And if we're being really honest, I didn't trust Mason to get everything done right. However, I should have remembered who I married. I married the most thorough, articulate, and perfectionist person that I've ever met. He's annoyingly optimistic and has a knack for learning how to do things just by watching YouTube videos. He doesn't give up if something doesn't go right the first time. He's not like me.

I've got to give credit where credit is due. This house was all him. The only things I did were texture (which was horrible!) and paint the entire house. Mason, however, created the concrete countertops, made the backsplash, installed can lights throughout the house, laid the bamboo wood flooring, put in a new shower, new sinks, installed appliances, built a kitchen island, installed new trim, and soooooo much more. He's done so much that I can't even remember. He transformed this place and gave us a home that we are happy to live in.

Here's a little tour of some of my favorite details!

My dad also built these rustic shelves. They are made from reclaimed wood out of a barn that he tore down when I was a kid.
